SUBJECT:

District 7 2008 Week Long Local Leadership Conference

District 7 will be hosting First and Second Year Leadership Schools for 2008 in Iowa City. Classes will be held the week of September 21, 2008. Classes will be limited to a maximum of 85 participants with a minimum of 20 participants required for classes to be held.

The conference is a five-day (Sunday mid-afternoon through noon Friday) residential training for local leadership. Please plan your arrival for no later than noon Sunday and departures should be after graduation lunch, Friday. Sixty minutes should be allowed prior to flight departure. Many flights leave at approximately 2:00 PM on Friday. Graduation lunch will be completed in time to make these flights. Airline flight arrangements should be made to fly into Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From the airport it is approximately twenty miles to the campus. Shuttle service is available.

Week long Leadership School provides in-depth training by University staff, with assistance from CWA. Local Officers, Executive Board Members, Stewards and Committee Members who have completed CWA Steward's Training are eligible to participate in the First Year School. In addition to these qualifications, participants of the Second Year School must have attended First Year School.

A registration fee of $275.00 per participant needs to be paid by the Local.

The tuition for each student is $550.00 plus the $275.00 registration fee. Several District 7 bargaining units have negotiated tuition aid programs. Pathways, Career Initiative, Career Bridge and AT&T’s Tuition Assistance Plan, all pay for this program. Please have your participants send letters of credit to the Oregon Office. Pathways participants will need to bring the class completion forms to class.

An application is attached to this letter. All available rooms are now non-smoking.  Attendees will stay at either the Iowa House Hotel or the Sheraton.  Rooms will be assigned on a first come basis.  Rooms will be assigned to the Iowa House first, and the Sheraton second.   Meal tickets will be provided beginning with Sunday evening dinner. Other expenses including transportation and personal charges at the hotels must be paid by the class participant.

Applications will be processed in the order they are received. In order to guarantee your first choice for housing, please register as early as possible.

The cutoff date for registering for First and Second Year Leadership School is August 22, 2008
